(August 31, 2009–Phoenix, Arizona)
The University Club of Phoenix announced that its Board of Directors has unanimously
voted to accept all Arizona Club members as members of the University Club. This will allow Arizona Club members the opportunity
to continue to enjoy the convenience and benefits of a private city club for business or casual dining, as well as meetings.
The membership opportunity takes effect September 1, 2009 and followed discussions among board leadership from both clubs.
"We regret that such a venerable establishment is no longer part of downtown Phoenix, but on behalf of
the University Club we are pleased to enthusiastically welcome Arizona Club members to the University Club" said Doug
Northup, University Club President. "In addition to providing a new home to Arizona Club members, the addition of new
members and business will benefit the University Club, but we also will ensure that our existing members continue to receive
the same level of access and outstanding service they expect and deserve. The dues structure will not change
for any of our existing members,” said Northup.
The University Club, located at 39 East Monte Vista in the Alvarado Historic
District, opened its doors in 1965 and has operated at its current location since 1970. The University Club provides state-of-the-art
amenities amidst the grandness of luxury living from an earlier era. The Club's world-class cuisine and service make it a
favorite venue for meetings of professional organizations, weddings and other special events. With the closure of the Arizona
Club, the University Club is the only remaining private city club in Phoenix. For information about the club or to book an
event, please call Manager Jan Haase at 602-254-5408.

Dear Members,
Join your fellow members for
another fascinating and fun President’s Series. Frank Barrios will be the guest of honor on Wednesday, February
4th and will be the seventh in the series of our community leaders to be introduced. Previous Presidents Series guests
were Joe Garagiola, Jerry Colangelo, Hugh Downs, Bill Shover, Peter Baird, Michael Crow and US Supreme Justice Sandra Day

University Club President’s Series Presents: Author Frank Barrios “Mexicans
in Phoenix” Wednesday, February 4, 2009 5:30 – 7:30 pm
Barrios, a Phoenix native
with family roots dating back to the 1800’s, tells a compelling story about the pioneer Mexican families in Phoenix.
His presentation is based on research and photographs of Phoenix residents from the rough and tumble Wild West days of the
1860’s through the politically changed times of the 1970’s. Phoenix was very much founded by
the Mexican people and we truly appreciate their influence.
Hors D’ Oeuvres and no-host bar $25 per person For reservations
please call 602-254- 5408 or email: uclubphx@qwestoffice.net You may also purchase a copy of his book “Mexicans in Phoenix” at

you for your patronage to the University Club this past year and we wish you a Happy Holiday Season and a Prosperous New Year! As
we do every year, the club will be closed form December 23rd and we’ll reopen on Monday, January 5th.

University Club President’s
Series Announces Author Peter Baird April 2, 2008 5:30-7:30 PM

Have you ever
thought about writing a novel or a memoir? Have you ever wondered what the perils, pitfalls and problems are in creating
a manuscript, finding an agent, getting a publisher and marketing a book? If so, join us on April 2nd when
Peter Baird, a University Club of Phoenix member and Lewis and Roca partner, talks about: Writing and Publishing a First Novel: “It Ain’t for Sissies." Having written for the New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, Men’s
Health, The Chicago Tribune Magazine, Shark Tales (Simon & Schuster), Criminology (Harcourt Brace),
My Brush with History (Black Dog & Leventhal) and dozens of other newspapers, books and magazines, Peter
spent 14 years writing his novel, “Beyond Peleliu”, which is about the generational impact of
war. As Peter knew from his own physician father who was wounded during the WWII in the Battle of Peleliu
and who returned with a claw for a left hand, wars don't end when the last shot is fired. His second novel, Beyond Peleliu, has drawn generous reviews in the Denver Post, Salt Lake City
Deseret News, NPR, The Journal of the American Medical Association, The New York City Law Journal, The Arizona Attorney, Litigation
Magazine and many other media. According to The Arizona Republic Republic, "Beyond Peleliu is...a jolting mix of childhood
trauma, physical and psychological wounds of war, the fragility of love, medical mistakes, legal ethics and the high
cost of ducking the truth... Heartfelt in every line, unstuffed and unforgettable." Peter will be signing
copies of his book that evening. Hors D’Oeuvres and No-Host
